Description:
Former site of Barrow Green Second World War heavy anti aircraft battery camp, South Lane, Bold.
The Barrows Green, H17 anti aircraft battery is first recorded in February 1940. Its last record dates to 22nd June 1942. (1)
An aerial photograph of 1945 shows the camp occupying the area south of the anti aircraft battery, along the road side towards the railway. An area of activity is shown further to the east still, adjacent to a sewage works. (2)
The camp is shown on the OS map of 1959 and is labelled as disused.
The camp was used as a prisoner of war camp for Germans, though local sources maintain that it was for Italians. (3)
