Pottery, INGRAM

Description:  (NU 00011504) Cairn (Site of). (1)

Cairn. (2)

"Ingram Hill... On the top of the hill, about a 1/4 of a mile in a north-westerly direction from each of these camps (NU 01 NW 24 and SW 1) are the remains of a cairn, out of which an urn was taken some years since, which is now in the possession of the proprietor, Mr Roddam". (3)

A cairn, one of a group of large cairns on the Ingram Hill, south of Broughlaw, opposite to the Chesters camp was taken down between 30 and 40 years ago (ie c.1820-30), and beneath it was found an urn of the shape and with the scorings which characterize Celtic urns.. "So large
was this barrow or cairn, that it supplied a sufficient quantity of stones to build the wall, enclosing the 'south plantation', which has an area of five acres". No evidences of inhumation were found. (4)

(Listed (with references to Authorities (3) and (4)) under "Urns known from the literature only"). (5)

The site of the cairn is upon the highest part of a hill at approx 1025 feet above sea-level, and is marked by bright green patch of turf approx 16m in diameter, showing in places areas of packed, loose stones. There are a few scattered large stones upon the ground, and a
small modern cairn of stones, 1m high, has been erected on the site. (6)

As described. No change since report of 8/4/57. Surveyed at 1:10,000. (7)
