Abstract: New data from Scotland and Ireland are compared with those from Ertebølle sites, and the suggestion made that massive exploitation of Ostrea edulis allowed the development of complex hunter-gatherer societies in these areas of Europe. As a consequence adoption of Neo modes could long be resisted.
