Abstract: Discusses plans for the future of English Heritage, in the context of a family day out at the 13th century Goodrich Castle in Herefordshire, first outlining some elements from the castle's history and features of its changing management and presentation since it was taken into guardianship in 1920. It is now proposed that English Heritage will become two separate bodies: a new charity to manage the collection of historic properties, and a body that will continue to function as the National Heritage Protection Service, perhaps to be named 'Historic England'. The proposal and its implications are considered in the light of apparently dwindling support for heritage from the present government. LD
