Abstract: |
Describes how a major new high-status Roman villa on the banks of the river Medway in Kent came to be investigated, culminating in an excavation over the 2013 Easter season by the Kent Archaeological Field School. In Roman times the Medway valley was a densely populated spur of industry and farming south of Watling Street, a major route. At East Farleigh and West Farleigh reused Roman material is present within the fabric of local church buildings; a talk on this was attended by a resident of nearby Teston who had found Roman material on her land. Fieldwalking was subsequently undertaken at the site, revealing evidence for a substantial range of buildings. A geophysical survey was then undertaken, and this was followed by test-pitting and excavation. LD |
