Abstract: Experiments have shown that it is possible to clearly distinguish post-depositional intrusion of soil organic matter into ceramic sherds from organic residues absorbed during their period of use. This supports the use of organic residue analysis in conjunction with conventional ceramic data and contextual information to define vessel function.
