Abstract: The author examines the evidence concerning destruction of Romano-British cult statuary in late Roman Britain, arguing that some body-parts are over-represented in the surviving material and suggesting that they continued to have an inherent value. The arguments in favour of Christian iconoclasm are questioned, and the alternative idea put forward that the fragments were treated as religious amulets or objects of veneration during a period of great change.
