Abstract: |
TR 1134. Describes new excavations and survey of standing remains and reinterprets 19th century excavations to give details of the defences, especially the E gatehouse, of the late 3rd century fort. Examination of the extramural marsh indicated a rise in sea level between AD 300 and 700 causing the landslip which eventually distorted and destroyed the fort. Sampling of the interior dated the occupation from mid-late 270s to c 350, but revealed no stratigraphical evidence for occupation by the Classis Britannica (expected on other grounds). Coins, pottery and other finds are catalogued. D G |
