Abstract: The graffito contains the word samiandum, which may derive from the verb 'to polish' and is here interpreted as the preparation of the slip from the clay . The term samius thus referred to the ware's gloss, not to its supposed origin on Samos; hence the term 'samian ware' is preferable to terra sigillata. D G
