Abstract: [SU 1985]. Excavations on Ermine Street revealed four centuries of Roman occupation, beginning with a short-lived ?military phase terminating c AD 80. The late Roman settlement was densely occupied and covered ?c 25ha; a variety of building techniques included one of particular interest, a raised timber structure only recognizable archaeologically by the sarsen boulders which supported the floor joists.
