Abstract: Reports on a recent RCHME survey of the standing buildings and earthworks comprising the remains of the palace of the medieval archbishops of York; these are also studied in relation to their setting. Drawing on evidence from the survey, combined with that from documentary sources and aerial photographs, the article summarises the history of Cawood and the archbishops' Sherburn estate before considering topographical evidence for the planned development of the town.
