Abstract: The paper seeks to establish an understanding of the textile mill as a workplace, using archaeological evidence to investigate the social dimensions of production, with particular attention to the ways in which the mill building helped to establish, reproduce and maintain labour relations. Initial analysis suggests that the internal spatial layout of the mill played an important role in establishing and maintaining a hierarchical and supervised workforce, and this provides evidence supporting organisational and microeconomic accounts of the factory system of production.
