Abstract: The paper argues that sports heritage is a legitimate subject for research, taking as its focus the results of a recent pilot study on historic sports places in Manchester and what sports heritage means to the people of that city. The author suggests that understanding what sports heritage has to offer helps to identify where sport and heritage interests can work together to enhance the value of places and improve the quality of life for communities and society as a whole, and that research in this area offers opportunities to work across the social and cultural spectrum in meeting the government's objectives for regeneration, education and healthy living.
