Abstract: Documentary sources are used to trace the development of the charcoal-producing industry in Argyll and its use both for iron smelting and the production of black powder during the Crimean War. The Melfort gunpowder works (and its explosion record) are studied in detail. Alan Crocker appends a note on the industrial archaeology at Melfort.
