Abstract: The overhead travelling crane installed in 1876 to service the boiler and plate fabrication workshop of Coburg Dockyard in Liverpool was recorded in 1982 by Merseyside Docklands Survey. It is discussed as a conventional archaeological artefact which illustrates a moment in development of the class, reflects the technological environment, and the extent to which the scientific rationalization of technology impinged upon the design.
