Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
This article reports on the 2008 season of a long-running project in Oxfordshire, which acts as a training excavation and is committed to education in the widest sense, with participants from across the world as well as a selection of British schools and universities. Excavations this year were spread across Trendles Field and the Noah's Ark Inn garden. In Trendles Field several trenches were continued from the previous season, investigating elements of a Roman semi-amphitheatre and continuing exploration of a shrine, in particular its relationship to Iron Age pits in the vicinity. Poor weather and a high water table prevented excavation inside the arena of the semi-amphitheatre. For the current project this was the first year of excavations within the area of a Scheduled Monument in the Noah's Ark garden, where the temple site was first excavated in 1939. Three trenches in 2008 investigated the date and character of the barrel-shaped ditched enclosure, revealing a long sequence of activity beginning in the Bronze Age and possibly earlier.
