Abstract: The principal focus was the shrunken medieval and post-medieval village of Bascote, where five separate areas of occupation were examined. In the centre of the village excavation revealed a sequence of medieval structures dating from the twelfth to fifteenth century, after which the area was abandoned. Nearby, an early ditch was dated to the eleventh century but little occupation evidence was found. Within the other more peripheral area, the earliest archaeological evidence was for occupation ranging from the mid-seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth century. Documentary evidence is taken to suggest that, while the latter date represented a nadir in the development of the settlement, it was not a complete desertion.
