Abstract: The paper examines the possibility that Roman villa owners used mosaic pavements symbolically to extend their gardens into their homes, thereby adding status to the family dwelling. Evidence is described from various parts of the Roman Empire of `hidden' or `virtual' gardens depicting water in the form of fountains and pools, flora, fauna and statuary.
