Abstract: |
Small-scale excavation produced evidence of Early Iron Age settlement on the hill top at Maldon. For at least part of its life, the settlement was palisaded. A large assemblage of Darmsden-Linton pottery was found, broadly dated to the sixth century BC. Evidence is also presented for the line of a substantial ditch, which is identified with the historically-documented tenth century burh. The possibility that the burh consisted of a re-fortified Early Iron Age fort is discussed, but the current evidence is inconclusive. There is a report on the `Prehistoric pottery' by Nigel Brown (15--18 & 19). |
