Abstract: Excavations revealed part of the butt-end of a substantial ditch, possibly of eleventh-century date, on the predicted line of the possible early enclosure known as the `Eldeworth' (see 89/715 & 94/1646). After the backfilling and levelling off of the ditch, there was a sequence of thirteeenth- to sixteenth-century activity. There are notes on earlier pottery (prehistoric, Roman and Saxon) from the buried soil cut by the early medieval ditch, by N Brown & C R Wallace (111 & 113). Rhona Huggins reports on the `Medieval and post-medieval pottery' (113--17), P Ryan on `Brick and tile' (115--18) and Andrew P M Harris on `Architectural stone' (118), with notes on other finds by O Bedwin, H Major & D D Andrews (122--3). V Fryer & P Murphy offer an assessment of the macrobotanical remains (120--2).
