Abstract: Part of a Middle Iron Age settlement, succeeded by three quite distinct phases of Late Iron Age and Roman field systems and some Late Roman and Saxon activity. The site lay some 1.3 km. west of the Roman roadside settlement at Great Dunmow; evidence for a planned system of land division is discussed. There are specialist reports on `The prehistoric pottery' (65--6) by N Brown, `The Late Iron Age and Roman pottery' (66--81) by Colin Wallace, `Saxon pottery' (81--2) by S Tyler, `Coins' (82) by P McMichael, `Miscellaneous Finds' (82--8) by H Major, and `Animal bone' (88) by Alec Wade.
