Abstract: Excavations at Pleshey Castle and King John's Hunting Lodge at Writtle yielded fragments of two main types of chimney bricks, one with an angled exterior surface, the other straight, which formed alternate courses of a polygonal chimney stack with a circular bore. The paper considers previous research on the bricks and re-examines their contexts and associations. Fragments from a recently identified second type of chimney from Pleshey are also described.
