Abstract: Excavations at Elm Grove off Goul Lane, Saffron Walden, in 2001 revealed part of the southern side of the medieval town enclosure ditch or magnum fossatum. No sign of an accompanying bank or rampart was identified. Archaeological evidence suggests that all sign of bank and ditch had been removed from the development area by the eighteenth century.
