Abstract: The Benedictine house had an elaborate E end without nave in mid-12th century; nave and chapter house were added, and a major rebuilding followed the collapse of the central bell tower (mid-13th). A stone coffin has a gaming board graffito, and wet conditions ensured good preservation of wooden coffins, pilgrim staves, leather and textiles. Prehistoric finds included late Meso flints and a ?burnt mound.
