Abstract:
(Summary of the award-winning Monmouth Archaeological Society's recent work.) The early med town lay close to the river, not near the castle: excavations revealed early post-Conquest pottery and a small late 11th/12th century house (69-71 Monnow St), and a substantial 13th century stone building (61/63) over a complex of timber buildings dating back to the late 11th century. A Grade II listed building at 83/85 was illegally demolished by KwikSave. Cooking pots for a slaked-lime process were found. F B/Fd
