Abstract: A 1500-year sequence in eight main periods from 5th century AD is being uncovered beside the ruined Priory where Ninian founded his church. A high status settlement (AD 550-700?) was followed by a Northumbrian-influenced monastery with possible market, c 700-850. Unexpected was a Hiberno-Norse ?trading post of c 1000; after 1128 the cathedral began building and its shrine of St Ninian brought prosperity to the town. Some 1100 graves out of a possible 4000 have been dug, suggesting 4-5 phases and a grouping by sex and age.
