Abstract: A view from an anthropological stance of developments in Europe from c 700 BC to the Roman conquests pays attention to types of exchange systems, rankings within society, and types of community organization. Steady development is not a feature of the period; for instance a sudden diminution in trading occurred at the end of Early La Tène, when expansion through warfare became a major preoccupation. Hillforts are a very variable phenomenon, both functionally and distributionally.
