Abstract: | Contra some recent writers, sampling does not mean doing less work, or filling bags for someone else to analyse, or extrapolating from the part to the whole: rather it requires the use of probability theory to control the reliability of excavated evidence. Numerous American publications and some British studies will be found helpful; and it remains true that in certain circumstances carefully defined questions can be answered by carefully designed excavations. | |
