Abstract: Excavation of a souterrain and part of its surrounding area has been possible for the first time. The chamber was a long, curving passage with boulder walls and seemingly a light wooden roof which had been removed when the souterrain was filled in. Bracketing radiocarbon dates suggest a life of up to four centuries. Associated with the souterrain was part of a settlement (the remainder already quarried away) with circular houses, heavy fences, fire-pits etc. The souterrain could be entered directly from the latest house, as well as from outside; the extreme cleanliness of the souterrain strongly suggested its use for storing grain and fodder, sufficient for a whole village. Also on site was a much earlier feature, a Beaker grave within a ring-ditch. The need for excavation of an intact souterrain-settlement is evident.
