Abstract: The last 20 years have witnessed significant scholarly discussion about wider theoretical issues within Roman Britain and beyond, not least the ongoing debate over the process of 'Romanisation', an emerging interest in identity both within the military community and the wider population, and an increased awareness of the potential of artefact and ecofact research to a wider understanding have had a variable impact so far on the prevailing narratives and research agendas for Roman Wales. This article reviews Roman Wales through thematic headings - military, the communication network, civilian, economic and industrial, cemeteries, burial rites and ritual, and environmental - considering three broad questions of: a.) what have been the significant publications and research themes? b.) what advances have been made in our understanding? c.) what are the significant research priorities for the next 20 years?
