Abstract: Until recently, the Trefael (or Tefoil) Stone (SN 1040) was classified as a standing stone probably of Early Bronze Age date (c. 2500 BC). After a initial geophysical survey followed by limited excavation in 2010 the authors can now confirm that the Trefael Stone is a former capstone that once covered a small burial chamber, probably a Portal Dolmen. This reclassification is based on the shape of the cairn spread which was exposed during excavation as well as its landscape and architectural associations with other nearby Neolithic burial-ritual monuments, in particular Carreg Coetan Arthur and Llech-y-Tribedd.
