Abstract: | In 1982 excavations in the two front gardens of the Royal George Hotel revealed a metalled road running in line with modern Monk Street but was sinking over the edge of a deep ditch under the modern road. The ditch was presumed to be the Priory Precinct ditch shown on John Speed's 1610 map of the town. The road should have been the medieval street built in AD 1300 but excavation indicated that it was pre-dated by iron working hearths containing 13th and 14th century pottery and the fabric suggested it was not built much earlier than the 16th century. In 2011 a watching brief another road was found on the western edge of the ditch containing medieval pottery and bits of Roman pottery on the natural surface. The presence of 18th century clay pipe stems and pottery on the surface indicates that this road was present in Speed's time but was not depicted on the map - and so the mystery of the roads remains.
