Abstract: |
The 1979/80 O'Donnell Lecture examines linguistic evidence for the nature of the contact between Celts and Germans, concluding that close contact came late, ie c mid 1st millennium BC, after which each language considerably influenced the other, in spite of a 'deep-seated and pernicious incompatibility'. |
