Abstract: Examines the environmental significance of location and its effect on the type, shape, and function of rural settlements in an area of particularly good data. The four RCAHM types of site (all periods) were studied for climate, soil, slope, altitude, and drainage; 95% of all homesteads with fields were on 'good' soils. Some comparisons with the SW English peninsula are made and the predictive effect of the analysis considered.
