Abstract: |
Describes the excavation in 1996 of a burial site overlooking the Upper Browney Valley in the western edge of the City of Durham which resulted from the discovery of a large cup and ring marked sandstone slab brought up by the plough in the previous year. It is suggested that the combination of cremation material, imputed inhumations, carved stones and artefact deposition with secure dating evidence shed fresh light on the burial ritual of the late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age. |
