Abstract: | The paper outlines the archaeological importance of the Salisbury Plain Training Area, which contains 41% of the remaining unimproved chalk downland in north-west Europe including 48.000 acres notified as Sites of Special Scientific Interest and 1,700 archaeological monuments, of which 551 are scheduled. The paper also shows how management plans have been formulated in an attempt to conserve this unique landscape. |
