Abstract The abstract describing the content of the publication or report |
the authors detail some results of the Scotland's First Settlers Project, focusing on the Inner Sound and the Sound of Raasay between the Isle of Skye and the west coast of Scotland. A combination of techniques were used to shed light on issues of mobility, resource exploitation and climate in the sixth to eighth millennia BP. An extensive midden excavated at Sand on the Applecross peninsula has proved to be the earliest known shell midden and the earliest occupied rockshelter in Scotland. The midden's contents are discussed and compared with those of other middens. The authors argue that in antiquity the sea acted not as a boundary but as a cohesive device uniting mainland promontories and the islands, sea travel being quicker and easier than movement overland | |||
