Abstract: the paper looks at the spatial and chronological patterns in Neolithic material culture and practices that can be made out in the Irish Sea area, and argues that three kinds of linkage were responsible for creating these patterns; these are characterised in terms of commonality of origins among the earliest Neolithic communities; regular or sporadic contact; and relatively long distance and probably relatively exclusive connections towards the end of the fourth millennium BC
