Abstract: the author examines the evidence of monuments, axe production and occupation the Neolithic in Cumbria, and suggests that there may have been a number of distinctive regional traditions within the area with seasonal movement between upland and lowlands and continued use of particular places over a long period; the need for a multi-scale analysis of the Neolithic in Cumbria covering local, regional and inter-regional contexts is discussed
