Abstract: Discusses the evidence, derived from a study of tree-rings, that there was a major environmental cataclysm in the mid sixth century AD. Historical sources from around the world are examined and it is suggested that there was an event such as a massive volcanic eruption, or a meteor impact causing a catastrophic dust-cloud.
