Abstract: Over 100 mottes are now known in the Grampian-Inverness-Dornoch area, their distribution charting the advance of centralized royal power into a remote and independent region. They date from the third quarter of 12th century, and it is postulated that they have close links with hunting reserves. Problems of longevity and continuity are also considered.
