Abstract: The paper considers the role of subjectivity within aerial archaeology, looking at two areas of practice in aerial photography -- the process of flying and photographing, and the role of interpretation; and three sub-themes -- the metaphors used to describe the practice and practitioners of aerial photography; the random nature of aerial photography and the role of luck; and the experience in the air.
