Abstract: | A watching brief identified extensive remains of Romano-British date including part of what could be a `ladder' settlement, with three (or possibly four) enclosures. The remains of three structures were examined, including a probable screen or shelter for wintering stock and a possible latrine. Occupation appeared to have occurred between the mid-third and late-fourth century AD. In one enclosure a crop-drying oven had been constructed over a silted-up ditch; after this structure had fallen into disuse and been levelled, the same area witnessed three successive inhumation burials followed by a cremation. Two other cremations were also found; one of these buried in a Late Roman native-style pot. A single Roman roof tile implies the presence of further `Romanised' structures in the vicinity (possibly a villa). Includes separately authored reports on: | ||||||||||||||||||
