Abstract: The family of Gordon came to Aberdeenshire from the Borders in the 14th century. Part of the family settled in the wild region of Inveraven and soon adopted the manners of the original inhabitants who were mainly caterans or vagabonds. The article gives an account based on documentary sources of some of their illegal activities which included raiding and murder.
