Abstract: | In the original excavation no attempt was made to discover whether the two structural periods accounted for the whole or only a part of the occupation of Birrens by the Romans; dating evidence was limited to inscriptions and coins. It is argued on the basis of further excavation that the phases originally identified were only a part of the total occupation and that the fort was re-occupied in the third century and continued into the fourth. A detailed report on the pottery and other artefacts is included. | |||||||
