Abstract: There are a wide range of denominations (values attributed to portions of land) in Highland charters and rentals. The subject is important for our understanding of past agrarian conditions in Scotland and a good deal of political history. The article provides a short summary of the subject and relevant publications as well as considering some of the details which still present difficulties. Celtic, Saxon, Norse, and Feudal or Scottish land denominations are all considered.
