Abstract: Reviews the current state of knowledge of Neolithic timber circles in Scotland. It is noted that whilst most understanding of these sites comes from the few excavated examples, the majority of known examples have been recorded as cropmarks on aerial photographs. Additionally, many of these cropmarks have not until recently been identified as being timber circles. Newly identified timber circles are listed, and the justification for their identification presented. The paper continues by discussing the cropmark evidence in some detail, and integrating it with excavated evidence to consider questions such as distribution, context, purpose, construction, and reconstruction.
