Abstract: Three jugs with lettering from Abthorpe (Northants), Coventry (Warwicks) and Spilsby (Lincs) are illustrated, described and discussed. A late 14th or early 15th cent date is suggested for them but it has not been possible to refer them to any kiln site yet known. The Lombardic characters that form the inscriptions on the first two jugs do not make recognisable words; those on the Abthorpe jug may be connected with the cult of St Osberga, while there is a possibility that the intractable Coventry inscription may represent the initial letters of a prayer formula as on the Benedictine medal also illustrated and interpreted. The religious character of the inscription Binedice on the Spilsby jug is compared to black-letter wording on contemporary Midland floor-tiles, of which a Great Malvern example is illustrated. The Midland distribution of the jugs is interpreted as a response to the practice of sorcery as reflected in early 14th cent witchcraft trials in the region. HEJLP
