Abstract:		 A report on the original masonry from various phases of building which can still be identified. Includes analysis of material in the White Tower, with some of the original ashlar masonry as well as Caen stone and Quarr stone in the chapel of St John and details of later twelfth century work with Wealden `marble' on the Bell Tower. Thirteenth to sixteenth century work is also recorded up to the point when the Tower ceased to be a Royal Castle and Palace and became the state prison and armoury.
