Abstract: First part of a two-part report on an archaeological/engineering evaluation undertaken at 54 Park Street, London SE1, adjacent to the site of the archaeological remains of the Rose Theatre. The report outlines the aims and objectives of the fieldwork, the planning background and the scope of the works, and the geological and topographical background; gives a brief documentary history of the site of The Rose, along with a summary of cartographic evidence; and the archaeological background, with particular reference to the excavations undertaken at the site in 1988--89.
